If you would like to be part of this project, or if you want to be kept informed of our progress, please send your web page links, email addresses and/or other information here.
The site has been prepared and launched by interested members of the global Swindlehurst family and is based on the huge amount of information gathered as the result of research carried out over a long period by some very dedicated people. Among them are
who can be contacted by clicking on their names.
We have set up a Facebook page - Swindlehursts International - so that anyone can keep in contact with us, whether Swindlehursts or not. As part of our broader interest, particularly in our area of origin - the Forest of Bowland - we are also keeping tabs on other activities. The Lord of Bowland's Facebook page is a source of interest and information, as is the Forest of Bowland website.
The map can be scrolled horizontally and/or vertically, and can be enlarged by double-clicking.
| 25th March 2012 | (At last!) Pix of Radholme Laund, yet another former Swindlehurst home, although the present house may post-date our occupation. See here. |
| 14th March 2012 | Addition of Facebook page info. |
| 20th February 2012 | Upload of Issue 3 of the Data files |
| 16th February 2012 | Addition of a poem from 1850s Glasgow which depicts the family name in an uncomplimentary light - see here. One theory is that the Swindlehurst referred to could have been an officer of the local poor law administration, whose task had involved assessing need and distributing pauper relief, and whose manner or bearing or conduct had been so unsympathetic that he had become a local synonym for all that was wrong with the political system. If there is any more information out there please let us have it. |
The Swindlehurst Heritage
Our forebears have lived in a wide variety of homes through the years. The humble ones have mostly disappeared from the landscape. These pictures are of some of the more substantial properties which we have graced. Other pictures of these properties are on the Photograph pages.

...the name is believed to have first come into common use in the area now known as The Forest of Bowland. More details and maps on this page.
...the period before about 1850 provides little historical evidence other than basic facts about births, marriages and deaths. As information comes to light it is included on this page.
...our dedicated researchers have accumulated over time (and continue to do so) extensive lists of family data. These are contained on this page
...a step in the process is the inclusion of photographs of people and places which figure large in our history. Photographs can be seen here and here. We will add others as they come to hand.
A branch of the family descended from James Swindlehurst of Brackengarth (qv) runs the Whitefriars Country Guest House in Settle, North Yorkshire.
Our homeland! For 800 years and more!
....you can send the information to us here, for us to put on these pages (although this gives us control of the information and its display).
....you can put the information in the public domain yourself (thereby retaining ownership and control of the information) by using the Google Docs (and Google Photos) free service. At this link is an explanation of how to access and use the service.
